Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson returned to practice on Tuesday in a limited capacity after missing the first four training camp practices due to a calf strain.
Wilson participated in 7-on-7 and was active in some of the team period but only on run plays. Wilson went 4 of 4 in his 7-on-7 reps.
Wilson said the calf injury occurred during the team’s run test on Wednesday, when he was pushing a sled. Justin Fields received first-team reps during Wilson’s absence.
After practice on Sunday, head coach Mike Tomlin said that he expected Wilson to take team reps for the first time this camp when the team returns from an off day on Tuesday.
“Wilson worked partially today, we and expect him to get going a bit as we come off this off-day,” Tomlin said. He later clarified that he expects him to participate in team periods.
Wilson said he would have been practicing all along if it had been up to him, and that Tomlin and the team’s training staff have just been being overly cautious.
Tomlin admitted as much, and said that the fact that Wilson is new to the team means that he’s a little bit less likely to take his word for it that he’s good to go, especially at this un-critical juncture of the season.
“I’m pursuing with extreme caution because we’re afforded that at this time of year, and particularly because I’m just getting to know him,” Tomlin said. “So, when you don’t have a background or relationship with somebody, when you’re in my position, it’s just prudent when given an opportunity to kind of be a little bit cautious to make sure a small problem doesn’t become a big one.”
Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Roman Wilson left Tuesday’s practice after being tackled on a jet sweep in seven shots. It’s unclear what the injury might’ve been. The trainer was looking at his hip/back etc. area. Wilson left practice on a cart.

Wilson, a third-round pick out of Michigan in this year’s draft, has been turning heads at Saint Vincent College. Wilson had his best day to date as a pro on Friday, and then repeated that feat on Saturday, combining big plays with an innate ability to get open, even on busted plays and in scramble drills. The talents the Steelers saw in the young Wolverines product are staring to show on the practice field.
