Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' season 3's trailer is a one-minute teaser that shows off the show's beloved characters, including Lieutenant Spock (Ethan Peck) in bed with Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush), the Starship Enterprise's crew in a holodeck murder mystery and a 1950s sci-spoof, as well as Lt. James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) toasting Lt. Montgomery Scott (Martin Quinn). The USS Enterprise even goes analog for mysterious reasons. Strange New Worlds' massive cast is on full display... well, almost, because one familiar character is never seen in season 3's teaser.
Captain Batel Missing From Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Trailer Has Me Worried She’ll Die In Season 3’s Premiere
The Lack Of Batel Is A Red Flag
Captain Marie Batel (Melanie Scrofano) doesn't appear in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3's trailer, and it's concerning because it could mean Batel dies in Strange New Worlds season 3's premiere. Marie is infected with Gorn eggs in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2's finale, with Nurse Chapel tasked with the desperate mission to find a way to save Batel. However, it's possible Chapel fails and Batel dies, just like Lt. Hemmer (Bruce Horak) did in Strange New Worlds season 1. Captain Batel's absence may mean she doesn't make it past Strange New Worlds season 3's premiere.
Captain Batel received a striking Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 character portrait, which hinted that Captain Pike's girlfriend lives through her Gorn infection. But there's a chance Batel is an early casualty of Strange New Worlds season 3. However, not appearing in Strange New Worlds season 3's teaser isn't necessarily a death knell for Batel. Dr. Roger Korby (Cillian O'Sullivan) was announced to join Strange New Worlds season 3, and he's not in the trailer, although guest stars Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt are. Fingers are crossed that Batel's omission from Strange New Worlds season 3's trailer isn't a sign that she'll be killed off.
Captain Pike In Strange New Worlds Season 3's Trailer Doesn't Hint That Batel Dies
Pike Goes All-In On Strange New Worlds' Genre-Bending
However, if Captain Batel does die, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 has a built-in way for Captain Pike to move on: a time jump. Strange New Worlds season 3 evidently leaps forward into the year 2261 because there is a shot of a sign indicating the United Federation of Planets' Centennial. Further, Ensign Nyota Uhura's (Celia Rose Gooding) hair is considerably longer in Strange New Worlds season 3. If Captain Batel doesn't live past Strange New Worlds season 3's premiere, Pike may have had time to process it and mourn her.
Lt. Sam Kirk Is Safe Even If He’s Not In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3’s Trailer
Star Trek Canon Is On Sam Kirk's Side
Lieutenant Sam Kirk (Dan Jeannotte) also doesn't show his face in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3's trailer, but, like Captain Batel, Sam will at least be in Strange New Worlds season 3's premiere. Sam was one of the USS Enterprise crew abducted by the Gorn in Strange New Worlds season 2's finale. However, it's possible that Sam is seen firing a phaser rifle inside the Gorn's ship in a quick moment in Strange New Worlds season 3's trailer.
It's unclear how much Lt. Sam Kirk will appear in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 - especially since it seems there will be plenty of Lt. James T. Kirk in the new episodes - but, unlike Captain Batel, Sam is safe from an untimely death. Canonically, Sam Kirk doesn't die until Star Trek: The Original Series season 1, episode 29, "Operation -- Annihilate!" Not appearing in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3's trailer doesn't mean Sam Kirk or Captain Batel will die, but it's still a more ominous harbinger for Batel.
