10 The Last Of Us 2 Storylines That The Show Should Expand On In Season 2

The Last of Us season 2 will be adapting the franchise's second video game, and these 10 The Last of Us Part II storylines really need to be expanded on in HBO's season 2. Although The Last of Us season 1 was an incredibly faithful adaptation of the original game, it did expand on several key storylines, with these changes being some of the most interesting parts of the series. Because of this track record, it would make sense for The Last of Us season 2 to pull off this trick as well, and these 10 storylines deserve this treatment.

The Last of Us season 2 is the highly-anticipated continuation of HBO's acclaimed adaptation of the video game franchise of the same name, with the upcoming season set to adapt the events of the controversial sequel, The Last of Us Part IIThe story of season 1 was mostly accurate to the source material, but HBO's The Last of Us did make several changes to the video games, expanding on storylines such as Bill and Frank's arcs, the Left Behind DLC story, and several other narratives. Season 2 is expected to follow suit, and these 10 storylines are perfect candidates.

10 Abby's Journey To Jackson

How Hard Was Abby's First Journey?

The beginning of The Last of Us Part II sees Joel and Ellie continuing to live in Jackson, Wyoming, making a life for themselves in the town of survivors. However, Abby and the WLF eventually show up to Jackson, with Abby killing Joel in revenge for Joel killing her doctor father at the end of season 1. However, the game barely explored Abby's journey to get to Jackson, and due to the journey from Jackson to Washington being treacherous, the same can be expected for the journey from Washington to Jackson, something that should be highlighted more.

9 The History Of The Seraphites

How Do They Brainwash Thier Followers?

The Seraphites torture Abby in The Last of Us 2

One of the most interesting additions to The Last of Us Part II are the Seraphites, a cult of religious fundamentalists that antagonize Abby and some of the other protagonists throughout the game. The notes and other collectibles give a little bit of context as to how the Seraphites were founded, but this group could be seriously expanded on in The Last of Us season 2. The inner-workings of the organization and their brainwashing process should be a greater focus of the upcoming season, giving the group even more room to grow.

8 Jackson's Treatment Of Ellie & Dina's Relationship

Was Ellie Accepted By Her Town?

Ellie is gay in The Last of Us franchise, with her being one of the earlier examples of an LGBTQ+ character in a mainstream video game. The Last of Us Part II does a better job of showing this than its predecessors, with one scene even showing a bar employee in Jackson being homophobic toward Ellie because of her relationship with Dina. Further highlighting Ellie's struggles to be accepted by the town of survivors could be an interesting way to reinforce this element of Ellie's identity, giving her even more motivation to want to leave Jackson.

7 Tommy's Hunt For Abby & The WLF

How Did Tommy's Journey Go?

Tommy saying goodbye to Joel in The Last of Us

Although The Last of Us Part II follows Ellie and Dina's trek to Seattle, they aren't the only characters that are attempting to hunt Abby and the WLF down. In fact, Joel's brother Tommy leaves first in The Last of Us Part II, with him warning Ellie to stay behind due to the dangers of the journey. Tommy's role in The Last of Us season 2 is expected to be expanded, and while he does meet up with Ellie later in the game, showing some more of his initial hunt would be a great way to further flesh out the character.

6 The WLF Deserters

What Caused Them To Leave?

TLOU 2 Abby Golf Club

The Washington Liberation Front is the main organization that the antagonists of The Last of Us Part II belong to, but they aren't all bad. In fact, collectibles in the game tell the stories of several WLF deserters and the different paths they take. One leaves the WLF due to religious reasons, while others simply want to escape, only for them to be killed by Ellie anyways. Further highlighting these ideological differences in season 2's main story could be a great way to utilize the WLF as a way to reinforce the themes of season 2.

5 The Last Of The Fireflies

Was All Hope Really Lost?

Dead Firefly surgeon in The Last of Us episode 9

One incredibly interesting detail in The Last of Us Part II is a piece of graffiti in the aquarium made by a dead Firefly, showing that they have lost all faith in their cause. The Fireflies were a group in The Last of Us that hoped to find a cure, but after Joel decimated their hospital base, the group fell apart. Exploring how the Fireflies finally fell apart would be a great way to make the world of the franchise more lived-in while better tying in the events of The Last of Us seasons 1 and 2.

4 Mel & Owen's Child

How Is Having A Child In The Apocalypse?

TLOU 2 Mel Owen

In The Last of Us Part IIMel and Owen are side characters in Abby's storyline, with Mel being pregnant when she is killed by Ellie. Although the duo are unceremoniously disposed of by Ellie, thier small arc is one of the highlights of The Last of Us Part II's Abby segments, which is why it should be further expanded upon in season 2 by giving Mel an even greater role.

3 Boris & His Bow

Will Boris Finally Be Seen?

Two battered and bloody women, one sitting in shallow water, weeping, while the other stands in the background, slightly out of focus.

One of the most famous side storylines in The Last of Us Part II concerns a survivor named Boris, with his story being told entirely through notes and environmental storytelling. Boris' daughter was killed by the WLF, causing Boris to attempt to take down the organization. Armed with his bow, Boris snuck through the town and hunted down WLF members, although he sadly became infected at an unknown point. Eventually, Ellie fights an infected version of Boris, taking his bow. This story really needs to make it into season 2 in some form, with it possibly being expanded on.

2 The Family That Lived In The Aquarium

What Happened To Them?

Abby in The Last of Us Part II

A large chunk of The Last of Us Part II takes place in an aquarium, with the setting telling a secret story that many players didn't pick up on. As it turns out, a family lived in the aquarium at one point, using it to survive the post-apocalyptic world of The Last of Us Part II. However, the family eventually split up, but the subtelty of this storytelling means that The Last of Us season 2 could expand on this storyline.

1 Ellie's Flashbacks With Joel

Will We Finally See More Of Joel?

Of all of the storylines and moments that need to be expanded on in The Last of Us season 2, Ellie's flashbacks with Joel are the most obvious. The Last of Us Part II features several flashback scenes that give more context to Ellie and Joel's relationship, with these being the only moments to feature Joel after his death early in the game. The Last of Us season 2 needs to feature even more of these moments, allowing Pedro Pascal's Joel to get the spotlight even after his tragic murder.
