10 Things About Fear the Walking Dead That Make No Sense

Fear the Walking Dead is the most successful of many The Walking Dead spin-off series. It was also the first, airing for eight seasons, starting in 2015, five years after The Walking Dead premiered, and concluding in 2023. Along with introducing an entirely new cast and new setting beginning in Los Angeles, Fear the Walking Dead also brought the show together with the original through crossover cast members.

Fear the Walking Dead recap: Season 5, Episode 6

The series started strong but admittedly began to waver through its final seasons, especially when storylines started to become more unbelievable, characters were not clearly defined, nor did they have good arcs, and the show got repetitive. There are a few things that especially don’t make sense involving specific moments and overarching themes within the show.

10 Everyone Continued to Follow Morgan

Morgan Jones is a crossover character from The Walking Dead, the storyline suggesting that he needed a new scene for his own mental health and decided to go on the road by himself. He set out on a long journey, eventually coming upon the group. As a The Walking Dead character who is on Daryl Dixon’s level, it’s no surprise that Morgan quickly emerged as a leader.

However, Morgan continued to lead the group into dangerous territory, time and time again, and often made horrible decisions. His constant insistence that there “has to be a better way” left the group in trouble more than once, many on the brink of death or even dying. Yet the group faithfully continued to follow him instead of someone else stepping up and taking over. With all the strong personalities, why did no one challenge Morgan’s fitness to lead, and why didn’t Morgan ever decide to defer to someone else instead of apologizing and internalizing his guilt?

9 They Can All Ride Horses Like a Pro

This is true for many of the spin-off shows, but with Fear the Walking Dead, especially, there are many seasons when everyone hops atop a horse and rides off into the sunset. While horseback riding is a popular pastime, it’s not likely that every single person had prior experience and knew how to ride a horse so well. In fact, most people who had never done it would have trouble even mounting the horse, much less directing and halting it.

It's possible someone taught them off-screen, and fans are just left to believe this is what happened. However, it seems that many not only ride without training or experience, but can also navigate the horses with equestrian-like skill, bobbing and weaving away from walkers.

8 Althea’s Video Recorder Always Has Power

A big part of Althea’s character is her prior job as a journalist. Using her video camera, she documents everyone she meets, hoping that one day, when the world resets, someone will find her work and it will tell a story they can’t. It’s admirable, and it makes sense that this is the one act that would keep Althea sane and connected to humanity.

But how is her video camera battery constantly powered? There are sources, like drawing power from her truck or other vehicles, or even solar power. However, given the limited resources, it seems that a video camera would be a last priority for utilizing valuable power, despite her thoughtful intentions. What’s more, there’s never a time when she, nor anyone else, picks up the camera and it isn’t charged.

7 Grace Was Exposed to Radioactive Chemicals Yet Didn’t Get Sick

When the group met Grace, she had been stuck at the chemical plant where she worked, exposed to harmful radioactive material that killed her co-workers, leaving many to roam the Earth as dangerously radioactive walkers. Miraculously, however, Grace didn’t seem to be affected. When she became ill, it made sense that she was finally feeling the effects of the radioactive material.

But then, the script was flipped to indicate that Grace only had morning sickness. She was pregnant from a one-night stand with a coworker and seemed to be otherwise perfectly fine. It makes little sense that Grace was so graciously spared, as though she had some type of immunity when everyone else around her died from their exposure.

6 Virginia Left Morgan to Die Instead of Killing Him, and He Survived the Impossible

Colby Minifie as Virginia smiling with one hand on her hip in Season 5 of Fear the Walking Dead

There are so many instances when Morgan should have died yet miraculously survived, arguably more so than any other character in any of the franchise shows, including the original. But the most ridiculous is when Virginia shoots him, leaving him bleeding out while a herd of walkers approaches. It’s unbelievable that he managed to survive this; his wound, patched, becomes infected (likely with the bullet still in his body), and he still doesn’t die.

But what is most nonsensical about this situation is that Virginia shot him and walked away instead of finishing the job. She had tried to kill Morgan so many times before. She had a perfect chance to ensure he would never be a problem again. She had proven herself to be cruel and had literally just tried to shoot him in the face and missed. Yet she doesn’t ensure he is dead before leaving. Interestingly, Virginia’s death episode in season six ranks as one of the best episodes of Fear the Walking Dead, according to IMDb ratings.

5 They Let Luciana Go Without a Fight

In one storyline, the group is faced with a new threat when a nefarious group discovers the oil fields they have been using and wants to steal it from them. They threaten death and harm, so to keep the peace, Luciana agrees to stay back with them. She will show them how it all works as long as they agree to let everyone else go free without harming anyone.

The group members agree, and they all merrily move on with their journeys as if it’s no big deal. They eventually do reunite with Luciana, but given how fiercely they have all fought to protect one another in the past, why did they simply let Luciana go as if she were dispensable? They didn’t bother fighting back or hatching a plan to save her. They just left her to be enslaved and seemingly forgot about her for some time.

4 Madison Didn’t Die After All

Madison Clark with black soot on her face in Fear the Walking Dead

The return of Madison was a clear, sad attempt at bringing some shock back to the show when it was waning in its final season. The original leader, Madison, supposedly died in one of the saddest deaths on Fear the Walking Dead. She closed the door to their community to keep the walkers in so her children could escape while it was ablaze. She knew this would sacrifice her own life, but did it anyway. Except she somehow made it out alive. She suffered from debilitating smoke inhalation, requiring an oxygen tank at all times. But she survived.

Season 8, Episode 12 “The Road Ahead”

Deadwood, House of Cards, Gone Girl

Never mind this never-ending supply of oxygen tanks, the storyline itself was weak. The idea that she went on to kidnap children for PADRE and didn’t want to risk anything to find her kids was not believable. This is completely contrary to who Madison was, even if she changed following her devastating life trajectory since then.

3 June Wears a Wedding Dress Before Being Taken Away

In one of the sweetest scenes, June and John decide to get married officially. They even have a little wedding as a way to seal their bond before June is taken away by Virginia and her group. They happen upon outfits, including a wedding dress that June wears to make the ceremony seem more official.

Season 8, Episode 12 “The Road Ahead”

It’s sweet, but in a world where the undead are walking around, seeking out human flesh, comfortable and protective clothing is not just a nicety; it’s essential. Yet she then heads out with her new captors without changing back to her regular clothes. She obviously eventually changes, and perhaps this decision was more symbolic than anything. But it wasn’t worth risking her life by not being able to run away from a potential herd or getting bitten on her exposed skin to make a point.

2 Troy Survives a Devastating Blow to the Head

Troy Otto in Fear the Walking Dead Season 8, Episode 11, "Fighting Like You"

Troy is another character brought back so the story could run full circle. When he originally appeared on the show, Troy proved himself to be mentally unstable. He built something of a friendship with Madison, who knew how to manipulate him. But when she realizes he led a herd of walkers to the ranch, putting everyone in danger, she angrily bludgeons him with a hammer and leaves him for dead.

Season 3, Episode 1 “Eye of the Beholder”

Season 8, Episode 12 “The Road Ahead”

Teen Wolf, The Originals, A Town Called Malice

The fact that he survived this is unbelievable, much less without any brain damage. He had even previously lost an eye when Madison plunged a spoon into his socket in one of the episodes of Fear the Walking Dead that shocked fans. Yet somehow, he survived that, too. To suggest those vicious blows only led to a concussion is laughable.

1 Dwight Doesn't Go to Alexandria for Help When it’s Close By

Dwight and Sherry looking up in Fear the Walking Dead

In the show’s final season, the group is trying to fight PADRE. They end up back in places where The Walking Dead originally started, with Dwight and Sherry even returning to Sanctuary. This means they are close to Alexandria, given that Negan and his army were able to travel easily back and forth from Sanctuary to Alexandria. Even if it was a day’s travel, it was still close enough to ask for help.

Both Morgan and Dwight crossed over from the main show, and both have been to Alexandria. They know where it is, and know that’s where most of Rick’s group was residing. Yet neither of them considered traveling to Alexandria to find Rick, or anyone else they knew from the past, to help them in this fight. They know the people of Alexandria can be trusted. Considering their goal was to save the children of PADRE, Alexandria seems like the most logical place to take these kids in, yet they never think to go there.
