2 former 49ers who'll have a tough time landing new jobs in 2025

These former 49ers players remain unsigned and will have an awfully difficult time finding a new team this offseason.

The San Francisco 49ers have made some wholesale changes to their roster this offseason, headlined by trades, free-agent departures and player releases.

One of the Niners' goals was to get both younger and cheaper, made necessary by fielding one of the NFL's oldest teams a year ago that cost $334 million in player spend, most in the league.

And the end result was a 6-11 record with a last-place finish within the NFC West.

A good chunk of newfound former San Francisco players quickly found homes, amounting now to over $321 million in player spend on those who called the 49ers their team a season ago.

However, there are some who remain unsigned, and some of that crop will be hard-pressed to land new gigs anytime soon, if at all.

Here are two such players.

2 former 49ers who won't be signed anytime soon in free agency

No. 1: Linebacker De'Vondre Campbell

Campbell's shocking decision to literally quit his team in the middle of a game late last season earned him precisely zero respect from teammates, as well as a team suspension for the rest of the year that denied him a chance to sign on elsewhere.

Making things worse, Campbell went on a social media rant in response to being called out for his actions.

It'd be one thing if Campbell had an outstanding year for the Niners, only blemished by his questionable actions. But the 31-year-old one-time All-Pro was a major defensive liability for much of 2024 and already had a reputation for clashing with coaching staffs before.

Few (if any) teams would be willing to take on such a headache at this point.

No. 2: Safety Tashaun Gipson

It'd be perfectly understandable if Gipson opted to call it a career this offseason. Turning 35 years old before the start of Week 1, the one-time Pro Bowler weighed retirement after 2022 but opted to return on a one-year deal, largely because he enjoyed playing alongside now-Denver Broncos safety Talanoa Hufanga.

Called back halfway through 2024 in a near-emergency role, Gipson managed to appear in nine games and boasted six tackles with a pass broken up.

Granted, the 49ers have question marks surrounding third-year safety Ji'Ayir Brown. But, if last year is any indication, the Niners aren't likely inclined to turn back to Gipson if there are any depth or performance problems at this spot on the field.

It's not likely any other team would consider Gipson a viable option at this point either.
