Despite Star Trek: Picard season 3's popularity and success, Paramount+ did not capitalize on a spinoff or continuation. Star Trek: Picard season 3's ending delivered a surefire setup for more voyages of the USS Enterprise-G, with Captain Seven of Nine, Commander Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd), Ensign Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), and even the promise of Star Trek: The Next Generation's legends making appearances. Picard season 3's cast, creative team, and the fans want Star Trek: Legacy.
However, Paramount+'s answer, to quote Captain Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick), has been, "No." Picard season 3's conclusion began the downsizing of Star Trek on Paramount+, with three other series' endings following suit. Paramount+ only has two Star Trek shows on the books now, and there are still no plans for Star Trek: Legacy. Time may be the fire in which we burn, but my and countless fans' burning desire for Star Trek: Legacy hasn't dissipated.
Picard Season 3 Left Questions Star Trek: Legacy Still Needs To Answer
Fans Want To Know What Happens Next To The USS Enterprise-G
Star Trek: Picard season 3 ended with such a tantalizing tease for what could come next in Star Trek: Legacy that it's almost criminal that no progress has been made to answer Picard season 3's finale questions. Even something as simple as what Captain Seven of Nine's warp command is has been left hanging. As is the state of Seven's relationship with Commander Raffi Musiker, and whether Jack Crusher and Lieutenant Sidney La Forge (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut) will bloom romantically. Plus, how will the popular Captain Liam Shaw be resurrected?
Two years later, Star Trek: Picard season 3 has left a massive cliffhanger lingering: What are Q's (John de Lancie) plans for Jack Crusher, and how is Q back after the omnipotent being died in Star Trek: Picard season 2? Other questions include who Commodore Geordi La Forge's (LeVar Burton) wife, and the mother of Sidney and Ensign Alandra La Forge (Mica Burton), is? Fans also want to know how Data (Brent Spiner) is adjusting to his humanity, and whether Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) became a couple?
Star Trek: Legacy's 25th Century Is The Most Interesting Era To Explore
Star Trek's TNG Era Has To Keep Moving Forward
Jonathan Frakes pitched his idea that Will Riker is now an Admiral in charge of giving Captain Seven of Nine and the USS Enterprise-G their missions.
After Star Trek: Nemesis in 2002, the 24th century of Star Trek: The Next Generation lay dormant, except for a brief glimpse in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek (2009). Star Trek: Picard reignited the TNG era, along with Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy, but now all three of those shows are over on Paramount+. It's a frustrating and disappointing state of events when this is the Star Trek era that the largest segment of Star Trek's audience has the deepest investment in. Star Trek's 25th century is the final frontier begging to be explored.
Will Star Trek: Legacy Ever Happen?
Hope Springs Eternal For Starships Named Enterprise
2 years later, Star Trek: Legacy appears to be a dead issue, despite a dedicated fan letter-writing campaign, and the encouragement of Star Trek: Picard's cast and creative team, who would still love to continue with Star Trek: Legacy. Paramount+'s Star Trek plan for the next two years involves two shows, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds seasons 3 and 4, and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy seasons 1 and 2.
While other Star Trek projects have been announced to be in development, nothing more beyond Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy are set in stone, and Star Trek: Legacy doesn't seem to be in the conversation. With Star Trek: Picard season 3's mastermind Terry Matalas working on other projects, including Disney+'s Vision series from Marvel Studios, and the rest of the cast and crew also having moved on, it's unclear whether Star Trek: Legacy can happen.
Star Trek: Section 31's disappointing reception (although it had strong first-week streaming numbers) also makes it questionable whether Star Trek: Legacy can become a made-for-streaming movie on Paramount+.
Yet whenever Terry Matalas, cast members like Todd Stashwick, Jeri Ryan, Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut, and Ed Speleers, and directors like Jonathan Frakes are asked about Star Trek: Legacy, the answer remains an enthusiastic "Yes," if it happens. Perhaps after Paramount Studios' sale to Skydance Media is finalized, there can be a reassessment of Star Trek that will jumpstart Star Trek: Legacy.
