The weight of two consecutive 9-8 seasons feels heavy on the Cincinnati Bengals' shoulders. Changing the narrative and going back to the playoffs this season requires improvements in areas that proved to be detrimental over the past two years.
You could argue Cincinnati prioritized coaching changes over personnel changes to find these improvements. Five of the club's eight defensive coaches are new, led by first-year defensive coordinator Al Golden. Offensive continuity was introduced with offensive line coach Scott Peters and assistant Michael McCarthy as fresh variables.
The locker room itself hasn't seen nearly as much change, at least relatively speaking. Only a handful of free agent signings, six picks from the 2025 NFL Draft, and maybe a single undrafted free agent are expected to make the initial 53-man roster.
The list of new players who can make the 2025 Bengals better is a short one, but these three have as good of a chance as any to make a real difference.
If the upcoming Sunday was Week 1, Slaton would be Cincinnati's only free agent signing to start. The former Green Bay Packers nose tackle took a two-year, $14.1 million deal to play for Jerry Montgomery, his first defensive line coach from 2021-23, in a new-look Bengals' defense.
Not rostering a true nose last year crippled the spine of Cincinnati's defense to defend the run. Slaton's presence in a role he's used to during his early days in Green Bay should provide needed stability for the Bengals as they look to force longer second- and third-down attempts.
Behind Slaton on the field will be Knight, the team's second-round pick who's slated to start at linebacker next to Logan Wilson. Knight is the direct replacement for Germaine Pratt, whom was released earlier this month after weeks of anticipation. His performance as a rookie will be compared to the most recent version of Pratt, the one who became a liability on the field just as quickly as his ascent was to becoming a core piece.
Taking the spot of a lackluster starter is an easy path to proving your value. Knight is a handful of years younger than Pratt and with that comes a boost in overall movement and tackling ability. He's already adapting to the mental side of things. The expectation is he hits the ground sprinting once the season arrives, and the middle of the defense should benefit from it.
Copy and paste most of Knight's case here for Fairchild, AKA "Pickle." The Bengals are giving their third-round pick the keys to take over left guard, replacing Cordell Volson with Volson still on the team, and it'll require a disastrous training camp and preseason for that to change.
Volson's struggles involved withstanding power in pass protection through three years of starting without any form of competition in the last two. Fairchild's main strength is, well, strength! He's a better athlete than Volson as well, but in terms of creating a firm pocket for quarterback Joe Burrow, the 22-year old should solidify the left side of the offensive line while playing in-between the line's two best starters in left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. and center Ted Karras.
