One observer believes Brock Purdy would not be the top quarterback people perceive the San Francisco 49ers leader to be without Christian McCaffrey.

There has been much debate over what kind of quarterback San Francisco 49ers star Brock Purdy is after three seasons.

Is he the kind of signal-caller who can lead a team to a Super Bowl, or simply a strong game-manager who needs everything right around him in order to succeed at a high level.

Purdy's 23-13 record as a starter includes two trips to the Conference Title game and a Super Bowl berth. After a nightmare 6-11 season in 2024, though, the conversations have gotten more intense.

"Purdy doesn't quite have the arm to threaten defenses deep and outside the numbers the way Matthew Stafford does. So Purdy wouldn't necessarily take full advantage of a true No. 1 wide receiver such as Justin Jefferson or Ja'Marr Chase," Cohn said. "Unless the 49ers are confident they can find another McCaffrey in the upcoming draft, they should think long and hard about paying Brock Purdy more than $40 million per season. Because he's only worth that much when he's combined with McCaffrey."

Cohn makes logical points simply because of the fact that they lost McCaffrey for most of the season last year and the 49ers stumbled to a 6-11 record.

With McCaffrey, the team is a Super Bowl contender.

Even if that means Purdy is nothing more of a product of a great system.
