49ers’ Brock Purdy Receives Brutal Comparison Amid New Contract

The San Francisco 49ers have been warned amid quarterback Brock Purdy‘s new contract.

One analyst doesn’t see it ending well amid Purdy’s five-year, $265 million contract, which he signed this offseason. That’s A to Z Sports’ Destin Adams, who compared it to former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, who had a four-year, $160 million deal before he flamed out in Gotham and got released in 2024.

“The 49ers chose to give Brock Purdy a massive extension this offseason,” Adams wrote on Tuesday. “If he can be what he was in 2023, they won’t have any regrets. Sadly, I don’t see that happening, though. I think the version we saw last year is more likely attainable, but there’s a world where he struggled to reach those numbers.”

“The 49ers roster has lost a lot of talent over the last two off-seasons, and Purdy isn’t the type of QB who’s going to elevate players around him,” Adams added. “I think the 49ers are going to experience major buyer’s remorse after the 2025 season concludes, maybe not Daniel Jones level, but regret nonetheless.”

Purdy had a healthy offense in 2022 and 2023 and became an MVP candidate and Super Bowl quarterback. Things regressed in 2024 amid injuries on offense.

Purdy notably missed star running back Christian McCaffrey in 2024 due to injury, and Jones notably struggled without former Giants running back Saquon Barkley, who left as a free agent. That said, Jones had one playoff win with the Giants in six years and just one winning season.

While Adams used a direct comparison between quarterbacks and big contracts, A to Z Sports’ Kyle Crabbs didn’t agree with the take.

“Purdy doesn’t have the biggest frame. He doesn’t have the biggest arm. And he doesn’t run faster than everyone else,” Crabbs acknowledged. “But there’s something to be said for time on task in the same offensive system and Purdy’s own personal development foiled against the 49ers’ offensive infrastructure can make for some complicated assessments.”

“But getting Christian McCaffrey back, potentially seeing the return of a fully-healthy Brandon Aiyuk and Purdy’s own growth and experience should lend itself well to a stable, effective, and efficient season in San Francisco,” Crabbs added.

Just McCaffrey and Aiyuk would make a world of difference for Purdy. McCaffrey had 1,459 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns plus 564 yards receiving and seven touchdowns in his last full season in 2023. Aiyuk had 75 catches for 1,347 yards and seven touchdowns in 2023, also his last full season.

Brock Purdy’s Run Game Improving

While Crabbs noted that Purdy isn’t the most dynamic runner, the former Iowa State star isn’t a statue on the field either.

Purdy has improved in every major rushing category over three seasons. His rookie numbers of 22 carries for 13 yards and a touchdowns can go out the window because he rushed for 144 yards and five touchdowns on 39 carries in 2023 for 3.7 yards per carry average.

Last season, Purdy improved to rushing 323 yards and five touchdowns on 66 carries. That’s for an average of 4.9 yards per carry.

While Purdy will never be mistaken for Lamar Jackson, Purdy finished 11th in the league for quarterbacks running the ball in 2024.
