San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is dealing with shoulder soreness after taking a hit during Sunday's loss to the Seattle Seahawks. While the team has provided few details about the injury, it's significant enough to limit the third-year quarterback in Wednesday's practice.
When asked about his level of concern surrounding Purdy, head coach Kyle Shanahan said, "Not much right now. We'll see how this week goes, but he's limited today, so I think that's good news."
In addition to Purdy, the 49ers are managing injuries to several key players. Running back Christian McCaffrey (Achilles), defensive end Nick Bosa (hip/oblique), left tackle Trent Williams (ankle), linebacker Tatum Bethune (knee), and defensive tackle Kevin Givens (groin) are all expected to miss Wednesday's practice.
Tight end George Kittle (hamstring), wide receiver Jacob Cowing (concussion), offensive lineman Jon Feliciano (knee, injured reserve), and cornerback Charvarius Ward are expected to be limited.
Ward returned to the team after stepping away following the heartbreaking loss of his young daughter. Shanahan emphasized taking a cautious approach with the cornerback as he reintegrates into the team.
"Having a good player like Mooney out there always helps, but this is going to be his first practice here in a while, so I really don't have any expectations of it," Shanahan said. "I'm going to take it slow, see how he is out there today, and watch him throughout the week, and communicate with him throughout the week, and make a decision as we get closer to game time."
When discussing Nick Bosa, Shanahan didn't offer any hints about the defensive end's status, saying, "He definitely could be good for Sunday, and he definitely could not be good for Sunday, so that's why I don't think about it yet."
Shanahan noted that players like Bosa typically have until kickoff to prove they are ready to play. He added, "Towards the end of the week, I'll have a better feel, and that's when he'll have a better feel, and we'll discuss."
The 49ers will release their official participation report after practice.
