49ers can reverse their dynasty-killing mistake in this blockbuster trade

Minnesota Vikings v San Francisco 49ers

Here's an interesting hypothetical. When did the San Francisco 49ers dynasty die?

Some would probably point to quarterback Steve Young's career-ending concussion against the Arizona Cardinals, when the infamous running back, Lawrence Phillips, missed a key block.

Some might point the finger at the day head coach George Seifert, a two-time Super Bowl winner, was fired from his position to make way for a college coach by the name of Steve Mariucci. Or perhaps you just think the day the Yorks took over was the day everything went to hell.

However, there's one day, to me, at least, that stands out above the rest.

Almost 33 years ago to the day, Aug. 26, 1992, the Niners traded star pass-rusher Charles Haley to the Dallas freaking Cowboys(!). In return, they got draft picks in 1993 and 1994. While some of the draft pick machinations resulted in William Floyd joining the team in 1994, the return was definitely not cognizant with the player traded away.

Haley was the true heartbeat of the latter-day Bill Walsh and Seifert defenses, a feared pass-rusher who almost everyone had to scheme for. Across his eight years in San Francisco, he recorded 66.5 sacks and was a part of two Super Bowl teams.

Trading him was bad enough, but trading him to a rival was worse: He won three Super Bowls in Dallas, beating the 49ers several times along the way. Ultimately, the day Haley left the Niners was the end of them having the ascendancy over Dallas, and while a spending spree would briefly regain it in 1994, it's arguably never returned fully since.

Haley, meanwhile, mended fences with the San Francisco, playing the playoffs in 1998 and a full season in 1999 before retirement. He's now, unsurprisingly, in the Pro Football Hall Of Fame.

All of this exposition is to say that 23 years on, it's time for the 49ers to take revenge, and better yet, the Cowboys and their owner Jerry Jones might just be stupid enough to fall for it.

The 49ers should trade for Micah Parsons.

49ers must go all-out to trade for Micah Parsons

OK, so a ton of rookie talent has been added to the Niners' defensive line this year, and we're all excited to see how the likes of Mykel Williams and Co. pan out. But adding Parsons opposite Nick Bosa would be game-changing on a variety of levels.

Not only would it turn the 49ers defensive unit, especially under coordinator Robert Saleh, into one of, if not the most feared in the league, but it'd right a wrong 23 years in the making. Acquiring Parsons would be seismic enough to change the whole team's trajectory, and truly put San Francisco back in the ascendancy.

It might finally wipe away those horrible years of Cowboys' ascendancy, too.

So, Jed York, John Lynch, whoever, imagine pairing one of the best defensive players in the NFL (unless Deebo Samuel is running at him, of course) with your young, vibrant defensive line, pick up the phone, and get the deal done.

Sure, it'll take a few picks (and high ones at that), but it's the kind of move contenders make that pushes them up the hill, and let's be honest, it's still not on the level of what the team did to acquire quarterback Trey Lance back in 2021.

Sorry.

Let's party like it's 1992.
