San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan brushed aside rumors that there is bad blood with Brock Purdy after reports that he "chewed out" the quarterback in the locker room after Sunday's game.
Shanahan was seen having an animated conversation with Purdy following the team's 28-18 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Grant Cohn of SI.com wrote that Shanahan went straight to Purdy after his postgame press conference and "appeared to chew him out quietly for at least five minutes."
"Shanahan didn't yell because he clearly didn't want the media to hear what he was saying, but he waved his arms and pointed his fingers and seemed exasperated," Cohn wrote. "You didn't have to be a body language expert to see he was upset and talking in a stern way. Purdy stood and faced Shanahan and nodded every few seconds like a good soldier but didn't speak. Eventually, the two shook hands and Shanahan left."
Shanahan addressed the incident on Monday, telling reporters that the conversation was nothing out of the ordinary and laughing away speculation of bad blood between the two.
"We were just talking like we always do, I just didn't realize you guys were all standing behind me spying on us," Shanahan said, via NBC Sports Bay Area. "I love talking to guys after the game, I just happened to be walking back and he was just standing right there so we stopped and started talking."
Purdy struggled in the loss, completing 17-of-31 passes for 212 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions, though he did add two rushing touchdowns. The loss dropped the 49ers to 2-3.
The game was especially costly as wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk suffered what the team said was a season-ending knee injury.
