49ers Controversy Grows As Brock Purdy Contract Offer Update Leaked

It appears the San Francisco 49ers aren't close to getting a long-term extension done with Brock Purdy.

The San Francisco 49ers may have over $38 million in salary cap space this offseason, but that doesn't mean the organization has money to spend at key positions around the roster.

At least not in their view.

Pro Bowl quarterback Brock Purdy needs a long-term deal with the organization, and his negotiation has been the main focus across San Francisco all offseason.

The issue?

It appears the two sides aren't close to getting a deal done at this point.

NBC Sports Bay Area insider Matt Maiocco broke down the entire negotiation process to this point, and feels there's a way to go for both sides to come to terms on an agreement.

"The latest is that the 49ers have made an offer. It's kind of sitting out there," Maiocco said. "Brock Purdy and his camp—and I don't know how much involved Brock is. I'm sure the agent is shielding him from a lot of this stuff. But the offer the 49ers have made isn't one that Brock Purdy's side is inclined to take at this point, nor will they."

It's not a good sign for a team that reached the Super Bowl two years ago with their starting quarterback to be stuck at the negotiating stage with that same signal-caller. It's even worse when one considers the fact that Purdy has a 23-13 record as a starter to his career.

"So it's just a matter of trying to find that right number," Maiocco continued. "I think Purdy's camp, it feels like the market is set. The market is what it is, and they believe that he's earned it. You know, Jed York referred to Brock Purdy a couple of weeks ago as a top-10 quarterback, so we'll see how this plays out.

"But right now, from my understanding, it doesn't sound like anything's close. There will still be, I'm sure, a few more offers exchanged here in the coming weeks. Everybody seems to be confident that it'll get done eventually, but it's just kind of this back and forth."

Things aren't going well for San Fran right now with Purdy, who could be a $50 or $60 million APY guy. Of course, that's where the controversy comes in.

If they are really this far apart? It may not get any better soon.
