49ers Defender Sends Warning Shot to NFC Rival with Highlight Video

Safety Ji'Ayir Brown is letting the reigning Super Bowl champions know that he isn't messing around this season.

The San Francisco 49ers will enter the 2025 season after a bunch of contributing players left in free agency. Especially on the defense, these departures open the door for young returners to fill in and make a name for themselves with a greater opportunity.

Ji'Ayir Brown, entering his third season with the team, is likely going to be one of those players who sees an increase in snaps. The former fifth-round safety is expected to fill in for veteran Talanoa Hufanga, who signed with the Denver Broncos. Another safety in Malik Mustapha, is recovering from injury, giving Brown a chance to make an impact for San Francisco.

He is embracing this opportunity with vengeance by posting a highlight clip on social media that is sure to rile up one particular NFC rival.

The video was originally posted by Brown and reposted by a 49ers fan account. The clips feature Brown locking up star receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith of the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.

Both clips showcase Brown staying with each receiver step for step in the red zone and not allowing any passing lane. These clips, however, were originally from a game during Ji'Ayir's rookie season in 2023.

It was the Week 13 game in Philly and Brown's second career start.

San Francisco dominated with a 42-19 win. Brown finished the game with six tackles and only one reception allowed on two targets for four yards.

The 49ers would go on to win the NFC championship that season, but their success ended there, going 6-11 in 2024. That fall off was just in time for the Eagles to torch the league all season en route to a Super Bowl title.

Last season, however, Brown did see an uptick in his playing time with the 49ers and he made the most of his reps.

Although he finished with just one interception, the Penn State product was solid in coverage, allowing a 57.1 completion percentage when targeted and only giving up two touchdowns. His coverage grade of 69.5 by PFF ranked 33rd among 171 qualified safeties.

Heading into 2025, Brown is reminding the league that he is ready for any challenge that lines up against him. The 49ers will need that mentality if they hope to return to contention by making him a regular starter.

Unfortunately, the 49ers and Eagles don't play this regular season. But if they square off in the playoffs, all eyes will be on Ji'Ayir Brown to see if he can live up to this smack talk against the defending champs.
