49ers Hold Tryout for Six Wide Receivers Amid Jauan Jennings Uncertainty

The San Francisco 49ers' receiving corps is in flux as the team prepares to begin training camp this week. Brandon Aiyuk and Ricky Pearsall were just moved to the physically unable to perform list (PUP) and one week ago, breakout starter Jauan Jennings announced that he is seeking a new contract or trade.

Now the latest report out of San Fran could be viewed as more bad news.

The 49ers held a tryout for six free agent wide receivers Monday ahead of training camp. Understandably, Aiyuk and Pearsall's injuries allow for additional roster spots, but beat writer Grant Cohn believes that the workouts "indicate that the 49ers expect to have an extra spot on their 90-man roster for a wide receiver, which might indicate that they're preparing for Jennings to hold out, or hold in."

Despite San Francisco's struggles as a team last year, Jennings was a rare bright spot, hauling in 77 receptions, 975 yards and si touchdowns - all career highs. He led Niners wide receivers in all of those categories behind top pass-catcher tight end George Kittle.

Aiyuk's Week 7 injury last season opened the gates for a massive year for Jennings, and now the 28-year-old entering the final year of his two-year, $15.3 million deal is requesting a pay raise for his services.

The 49ers' response by bringing in a load of prospective receiver signees instead of working on retaining Jennings is not a good development for his future outlook with the club.

Last year, Aiyuk's holdout of training camp occupied much of the drama-based dialogue heading into the season. The team's 6-11 finish after his injury didn't make matters any better.

Now after a seemingly productive offseason - that saw re-signings to Brock Purdy, Fred Warner, and Kittle - this new fear of a Jennings holdout has the makings of bad déjà vu.

To avoid this situation getting any messier than it already is, general manager John Lynch should trade Jennings now or sign a pass-catcher or two in free agency.

According to NBC Bay Area's Matt Maiocco, the team worked out Equanimeous St. Brown, Quintez Cephus, Grant DuBose, Ramel Keyton, Stanley Morgan and Brandon Powell. A number of proven veteran receivers also remain on the open market like Keenan Allen and Amari Cooper.

If the Niners want to keep Jennings? They'll face some serious pressure to sign him this week if he exercises a holdout.

The front office faced this pressure last year and got a deal done ... but only time will tell if that schedule is followed again.
