49ers Make Coaching Change After Disappointing Season

The San Francisco 49ers entered the 2024 season with Super Bowl aspirations following a 25-22 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII.

Instead, the team suffered a number of devastating injuries that left saw the team finish 1-7 over its last eight games and finish five games under .500. Not only did the team not make a run to the Super Bowl, it finished with the No. 11 pick in the 2025 NFL draft.

Not long after the team conducted exit interviews, star wide receiver Deebo Samuel demanded - and received permission - to seek a trade elsewhere.

Samuel's impending departure from the team isn't the only shakeup for the 49ers, though. After the 2024 season came to a close, head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed Klay Kubiak would be promoted to offensive coordinator.

“I thought he did an awesome job and Klay's role is going to be the same as it's been which has been the offensive coordinator," said Shanahan. "He just hasn't had that title yet. I mean, Klay has done as much as anyone on offense for these last two years. So, this was his second year doing that and he gets better and better each year at it. He just hasn't had the official title yet. And now he'll get the official title, which he more than deserves, but it's more about recognizing what he's already been doing and doing at a high level.”

On Tuesday afternoon that move became official, along with another. The 49ers replaced quarterbacks coach Brian Griese with Mick Lombardi.

Griese had been the 49ers quarterbacks coach since 2022.

Kubiak, meanwhile, fills a role that's been left vacant since Mike McDaniel's departure to become head coach of the Miami Dolphins.
