49ers Named 'Perfect Fit' For College Football Star QB to Replace Brock Purdy in 2025

There have been rumors in recent weeks that the San Francisco 49ers could move on from Brock Purdy before the 2025 season. Purdy has led the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance, but his contract situation makes things complicated after 2024.

The 49ers might decide their best move isn't to give Purdy nearly $60 million per year to play quarterback as this kind of salary could prohibit San Francisco from filling out other needs on the roster, and Purdy hasn't shown he can overcome such talent deficits to lead a team on a deep postseason run.

The 49ers are 4-4 entering Week 9, and a challenging schedule in November could prove to head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch what path they need to take at quarterback for the long term.

ESPN's draft analyst Steve Muench named Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers as a "perfect fit" to replace Purdy via the 2025 NFL Draft.

"Brock Purdy will be going into the final year of his rookie contract in 2025, and he may no longer be a lock to get an extension," Muench wrote.

"He has struggled against man coverage, and the 49ers entered Week 8 with a 3-4 record. The 49ers could target the 6-foot-2, 210-pound Ewers late in the first round or even move up in the second -- they have multiple Day 2 picks -- to get him. Ewers has been inconsistent but would be arguably the most purely talented passer Kyle Shanahan has had since taking over as the 49ers' coach in 2017."

Ewers is 130-of-188 passing for 1,389 yards, 14 touchdowns, and six interceptions through Texas' first eight games this season. He's thrown for 7,045 yards, 51 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions in his college career thus far. His career accolades also include a College Football Playoff appearance for the 2023 season.
