49ers Owner Reveals Whether Kyle Shanahan Will Return in 2025

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch are "not going anywhere," according to team owner Jed York. Per an interview in The San Francisco Standard, York has confirmed that he plans to bring back the HC and GM despite a disappointing 2024.

York spoke to Standard reporter Tim Kawakami before last night's matchup against the Detroit Lions, in which the 49ers ended up with a 40-34 loss and an injured Brock Purdy. Speaking about Shanahan and Lynch's future with the team, the 49ers owner minced no words.

"York was crystal-clear when I asked if Shanahan and Lynch would be back in their roles for the 2025 season. 'They're not going anywhere,' York said. I asked: So I can write that you said this? 'You can write that, for sure,' York said. 'They're not going anywhere.'"

That is a remarkable amount of confidence in Shanahan and York, considering the 49ers are currently dead last in the NFC West with a 6-10 record under their leadership.

The 49ers entered the season as defending NFC Champions but struggled to match or improve upon their 12-5 record from last year.

Their season took a downturn with a Week 11 loss to the Seattle Seahawks and a Week 12 loss to the Green Bay Packers. By Week 16, with victories by the Los Angeles Rams and Washington Commanders, the 49ers were officially eliminated from playoff contention for the first time since 2020. It doesn't help that they clocked their first losing season since that year when they also lost to the Miami Dolphins later that same day.

On the other hand, under the stewardship of Shanahan and Lynch, the 49ers have made the playoffs four times and made two Super Bowl appearances in eight seasons.

Both Shanahan and Lynch signed contract extensions in 2023, securing their positions through 2026, with Shanahan reportedly earning about $15 million a year through 2027, ensuring their continued leadership as they look to bounce back in future seasons.

For his part, Shanahan seems to have no interest in coaching for any other team than the 49ers. While responding to speculation of him leaving San Francisco earlier in December, the HC said, "I don't want to be any place in the world more than here."
