49ers QB Brock Purdy Believes He Is A Top-10 Quarterback In The NFL

Purdy has been the talk of the NFL the last few days after agreeing to a contract extension with the 49ers for a five-year $265 million deal. Since becoming a starter for the 49ers in 2022, Purdy has been able to help the 49ers reach two NFC Championship game appearances and a Super Bowl. In 2023, Purdy finished fourth in MVP voting and was selected for the Pro Bowl. When asked if he thought he was a top ten quarterback by “Murph & Markus” on KNBR, Purdy confidently believed he was.

“Yessir, I think for sure I am a top-ten quarterback, and I’ll leave it at that,” Purdy said.

Purdy Says He’s One of the Best in the NFL

Purdy is always the topic of discussion within the NFL quarterback hierarchy because of the team and coach he plays for. The former Iowa State University standout isn’t the biggest or strongest quarterback in the league, though his production matches up with the quarterbacks who are more of an athletic specimen than he is. Critics who are not totally sold on how good Purdy is point to his coach, Kyle Shanahan, whose offenses have a history of getting good production out of every quarterback who plays in it. However, the 49ers organization has always made it clear they believe in Purdy’s ability as a top quarterback.

“Brock is a tremendous leader and a fantastic representative for the 49ers organization, and we are ecstatic to get this deal done,” 49ers General Manager John Lynch said about Purdy. “When we took him with the last pick in the draft, we knew he had the potential to succeed in the league, but we had no idea how special of a player he would become. He has played at an exceptionally high level since taking over the starting job. We look forward to seeing him continue to lead this team for years to come.”

The top four quarterbacks in the league are widely agreed upon even though the order is debated, but Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Joe Burrow make up the four best in the NFL. Quarterbacks 5-10 has always been a fluid conversation with quarterbacks entering and exiting that tier all the time.

Purdy’s Case For Being a Top-Ten Quarterback?

Since becoming a starter in the NFL, Purdy has ranked first in yards per attempt and second in passer rating. He has thrown the third most passing yards with 9,242 yards to go along with being sixth in completion percentage and seventh in touchdown passes.

The advanced metrics look favorable to Purdy’s case as a top-ten quarterback as well. In 2024, he ranked seventh with a 51.8 percent success rate at the position and had an EPA per play (Expected Points Added) of 0.198, which is eighth in the NFL. Purdy has consistently ranked among the top of the league in raw stats and advanced, so outside of  his draft position; it’s hard to make a case why he wouldn’t be a top-ten quarterback.

Purdy believes the 49ers’ Super Bowl window is still open, and he will look to lead the team to their second Super Bowl appearance as the starter.
