49ers news: 3 players re-signed; Jon Felicano and Ambry Thomas head to the IR - Niners Nation

The San Francisco 49ers continue to modify their roster. The team officially announced they re-signed tight end Eric Saubert, offensive lineman Ben Bartch, and cornerback Rock Ya-Sin. The Niners released defensive lineman Sam Okuayinonu, who could return to the practice squad if he clears waivers, as there is still one spot open.

Additionally, the 49ers placed guard Jon Feliciano on the Injured Reserve with a knee injury and cornerback Ambry Thomas on IR with a broken forearm.

Bartch will back up Aaron Banks and Dominick Puni. The same goes with Spencer Burford. Kyle Shanahan said, “it’s going to be hard to take that from him in two practices,” when asked if Puni would start. General manager John Lynch added, “I’d be lying if I said he wasn’t better than I thought he might be.”

Bringing back Ya-Sin was a no-brainer. To me, he outperformed second-round pick Renardo Green during the preseason and training camp. He gives the Niners much-needed depth at cornerback.

Saubert joins George Kittle and Jake Tonges in the tight end room. Lynch said Tonges was a surprise. NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco said that Saubert will be Kittle’s backup.
