49ers sign defensive tackle to the practice squad

Shakel Brown was added to the Niners practice squad.

The San Francisco 49ers brought back a familiar face to the practice squad. Shakel Brown, who was with the Niners in the spring when they signed him on May 14, was brought back. Brown was released on August 27.

Before his brief stint with the Niners, Brown was on the Injured Reserve for the 2023 season before being waived by the Tennesee Titans a week before San Francisco signed him. Brown signed with the Titans after the 2023 NFL Draft.

The 49ers could elect to elevate T.Y. McGill, who was the only other defensive tackle with NFL experience, for next week’s game against the New England Patriots. The other option on the roster is Evan Anderson, an undrafted free agent in 2024.

It would not be surprising to see the 49ers make a move ahead of the trade deadline. For who? Well, that is to be determined. There aren’t many options available, and it’s unlikely you’ll ever find a player of the caliber of Javon Hargrave for sale by the deadline.
