It's good to be number one.
The San Francisco 49ers' 2024 season has been a long way from perfect to this point, but they end Week 6 first in the NFC West.
That status was confirmed after the Arizona Cardinals, who stunned San Francisco last week, slumped to a 34-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers.
Had the Cardinals prevailed, they would have led the West at 3-3 courtesy of their perfect 2-0 record in the division.
Instead, a Packers team that will be looking to avenge last season's playoff defeat to the 49ers when they renew acquaintances in Week 12 dropped the Cardinals to 2-4, leaving Arizona third in the division ahead of the 1-4 Rams.
San Francisco sits top of the pile at 3-3, the 49ers' primetime win in Seattle giving them a head-to-head tiebreaker over the Seahawks.
Record wise, it's still not where the 49ers want to be, and they will believe they should be 5-1 after letting double-digit leads slip against the Rams and Cardinals.
But for all their inconsistencies this season, the Niners are, thanks to one of their biggest rivals in the NFC, in a pleasingly familiar position as they seek to win the division for the third straight year, a feat they have not achieved since their 1994 Super Bowl-winning campaign.
