The San Francisco 49ers are shorthanded at wide receiver after losing their No. 1 wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk for the season due to an MCL and ACL injury.
The 49ers listed receivers Jauan Jennings (hip), Deebo Samuel (wrist/illness), and Chris Conley (ankle) on their injury report in Week 8. Samuel suffered a rib injury during the 49ers' 30-24 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night
The 49ers have an opportunity to rest in Week 9 as they're on their bye. The downtime can help San Francisco's battered roster heal, but the 4-4 team could consider adding fresh help from the outside to prepare for a daunting schedule in their next five games against opponents with winning records.
Doug Farrar with AS suggested the 49ers could trade for New York Jets wide receiver Mike Williams to help replace Aiyuk's role on the offense.
"If you superimpose Williams' tape over Aiyuk's, the route responsibilities aren't dissimilar," Farrar wrote. "Both Williams and Aiyuk make their bread with go, slant, corner, and post routes to a high degree, and if Williams was able to maximize his attributes with Brock Purdy instead of (Aaron) Rodgers as his quarterback, and Kyle Shanahan instead of [INSERT NAME HERE] as his offensive shot-caller, who knows how far it could go?"
The Jets signed Williams to a one-year deal worth $10 million for the 2024 season. He didn't see much use in the Jets' offense before New York traded for Davante Adams. Now the 30-year-old veteran is set to see fewer targets from Rodgers.
Williams has 11 receptions for 160 yards through his first eight games with the Jets.
What better way for Williams to make a statement to Rodgers than to win a Super Bowl with the 49ers, a team the legendary quarterback wanted to be drafted by?
