49ers trading for Micah Parsons would complete a wild full-circle moment

Dallas Cowboys All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons officially wants out after failing to reach an agreement on a new contract, declaring as much publicly on social media.

49ers trading for Micah Parsons would complete a wild full-circle moment

There are 31 other teams across the league who'd improve with him on the roster, including the San Francisco 49ers.

Yes, even the Niners who already boast another former Defensive Player of the Year in edge Nick Bosa and also spent a recent first-round NFL Draft pick on Georgia defensive end Mykel Williams last April while also trading with the Philadelphia Eagles for edge Bryce Huff earlier this offseason.

OK, especially in light of San Francisco's previous cost-cutting measures and after dishing out the biggest contract in franchise history to quarterback Brock Purdy, the 49ers realistically aren't trading for Parsons even if it only cost general manager John Lynch and Co. a modest set of late-round draft picks. Simply meeting Parsons' contractual demands isn't something the Niners are going to do despite boasting plenty of salary cap space.

San Francisco fans can laugh, though. That's fine.

But there's an ironic twist that'd be in play if the 49ers -- somehow -- managed to pull off a Parsons trade with Dallas.

Would-be 49ers trade for Micah Parsons would bring 2021 NFL Draft to full circle

Let's rewind back to the 2021 draft when the Niners traded up to No. 3 overall and drafted now-Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Trey Lance, who was dealt to the Cowboys after two unsuccessful years in San Francisco.

By grabbing Lance, the 49ers subsequently gave up not only on Parsons, selected by Dallas at No. 12 overall later in Round 1, but they also passed on quarterback Mac Jones, and Jones was later picked by the New England Patriots at No. 15.

Jones is now with the Niners after four failed years with both the Pats and Jacksonville Jaguars, but adding Parsons via trade would mean both he and the quarterback would be in the Bay Area despite San Francisco's failed efforts with Lance.

Again, the chances of this happening are about as remote as could possibly be.

But, it's nevertheless fun to think about.
