Aaron Judge may have taken note of the comments rookie pitcher Hunter Dobbins made prior to Sunday's game between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees.
Dobbins made his first career start against the Yankees on Sunday. In an interview that was published before the game, the 25-year-old spoke openly about his hatred for Boston's biggest rival. Dobbins said he grew up a Red Sox fan because of his father and that he would rather retire than play in pinstripes.
"My dad was a die-hard Red Sox fan. And I’ve said it before, that if the Yankees were the last team to give me a contract, I’d retire," Dobbins said.
Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. was excited about the derogatory remarks and posted about them on social media. Judge seems like he was paying attention, too.
Judge came to the plate with a runner on in the bottom of the first inning. He turned on the first pitch he saw from Dobbins and hit a moon shot to right-center field.
The home run was Judge's 22nd of the season. The two-time AL MVP is arguably the best hitter in baseball and does not need bulletin-board material to blast home runs, but Dobbins' comments probably inspired Judge to put a little extra effort into that swing.
Dobbins has been decent in his first MLB season. He entered Sunday's game with a record of 2-1 and a 4.06 ERA across nine appearances (seven starts).
There's nothing unusual about a Red Sox player hating the Yankees, but Dobbins probably should have considered saving his comments for after Sunday's game.
