Quarterback Aaron Rodgers already faced a murky future with the New York Jets before the season came to an end, and the team's decision to hire Aaron Glenn as their next head coach may have only added new uncertainty.
The Jets decided to tap the former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator as their next head coach, bringing a measure of stability to a franchise that fired its head coach and general manager during the season.
It will now fall largely on Glenn to decide whether Rodgers returns to the team, and one analyst believes it could be a bad sign for the former MVP quarterback. Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report named Rodgers as one of the "losers" of the recent hire, noting that it likely marks the end of his tenure in New York.
"It's a sticky wicket for Glenn," Davenport wrote. "The Jets don't have a high enough draft pick to land one of this year's elite rookies. Outside of Sam Darnold, the free-agent market under center isn't great. Rodgers may well be the best option for the Jets in the short term. But turning around the culture in New York won't be easy with 52 players playing by one set of rules and one playing by another."
Davenport predicted that the "smartest play" is for the Jets and Rodgers to part ways, even if it forces the team to take a step back with a new quarterback in 2025.
There had been rumors for months that the Jets would move on from Rodgers, who missed the 2023 season after suffering a torn Achilles. Though the team was seen as a playoff contender going into the season, they stumbled to a 5-12 record behind inconsistent play from Rodgers.
