After being cut by Yankees, DJ LeMahieu already being linked to new team

Now that the Yankees have parted ways with DJ LeMahieu after the infielder’s seven-year tenure in New York, what’s next for the 36-year-old?

Jon Morosi of MLB Network speculated on Thursday that the Seattle Mariners could be a potential fit for LeMahieu, who had a 91 OPS+ through 45 games this season.

LeMahieu could project as a backup/platoon player at first, second or designated hitter. The Mariners start lefty Luke Raley at first, but he is ineffective against same-side pitchers. Donovan Solano is currently serving as the first base backup, playing 315 2/3 innings at the position this year. He started the season in one of the worst slumps of his career, and while he turned around his season in June, he still has been a weak spot in the lineup with an 81 OPS+.

The Yankees owe LeMahieu $22 million for the remainder of his six-year deal that would have run through 2026. General manager Brian Cashman said releasing him was “best for the roster configuration going forward.”

LeMahieu, a two-time batting champion and three-time All-Star, is hitting .266/.338/.336 with two home runs and 12 RBI through 142 plate appearances this season.
