The Boston Red Sox defeated the Baltimore Orioles 19-5 on Friday. This win improved Boston to 26-26 on the season, which is tied for second in the AL East standings. While the victory was encouraging, the Red Sox lost star third baseman Alex Bregman after three plate appearances.
Exiting the game with what the team called right quad tightness (h/t NESN), Bregman told reporters after the game his injury turned out more positive than he initially anticipated.
"All my strength is still there right now which is good," he said. "It's just a day-to-day thing at this point... We'll see what tomorrow brings, but actually positive from what I initially thought."
Prior to Friday's game, the Red Sox announced the news that Bregman had been named one of the team's Foundation Program Captains for 2025.
"The Red Sox Foundation today announced that Alex Bregman, Triston Casas, David Hamilton, Liam Hendriks, and Garrett Whitlock will serve as 2025 Program Captains for the team charity’s core programs and community partners," the team wrote in a statement.
Bregman reacted to this announcement by resharing it on his Instagram story.
Per the team's official statement, Bregman and his wife Reagan will specifically lead the Nike RBI program.
"The Red Sox Foundation Nike RBI program strives to ensure every young person in New England has access and opportunity to play baseball and softball by providing team equipment, uniforms, coaches, field access and umpires at little to no cost to players and their families," the team wrote.
In his first season with the Red Sox, Bregman is hitting .297 with a .935 OPS that ranks ninth in MLB.
