Alex Bregman originally was in the lineup, batting second, for Wednesday’s series finale against the Minnesota Twins. But the star third baseman was pulled from the lineup, sparking fear from Boston Red Sox fans concerned that Bregman aggravated the quadriceps injury that had recently sidelined him for nearly two months.
So, what happened? Red Sox manager Alex Cora provided an update before first pitch from Target Field.
“Last night, I told him, ‘Text me in the morning, tell me how you feel,'” Cora told reporters. “He feels good with the quad, but a little bit tired.”
Cora then was asked whether the Red Sox simply didn’t want Bregman playing on consecutive days.
“Yeah, that was the thought process,” he said. “But, you know, (gave) him the chance to be honest with me in the morning. He texted me in the morning, and he’s like, ‘I can go, but I’m a little bit tired.’ So, I’m like, ‘OK.'”
We’ll just have to wait and see whether Bregman will need to miss time beyond Wednesday’s game. With the Red Sox scheduled for an off day Thursday, Bregman will have extra time to rest before Boston hosts the Houston Astros on Monday.
In his first 13 games after returning from the injured list, Bregman hit .292 with three homers and an .848 OPS in 49 plate appearances.
