With just weeks to go until spring training, the Boston Red Sox still need to make a few moves to deliver the offseason they promised at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.
Red Sox fans have had names of hopeful additions on their minds for months, and calls for the team to sign someone have only grown louder as next season nears. Boston has been linked to plenty of names on the reliever market, while just a few of its position player targets remain available. After the Dodgers signed Tanner Scott and the Blue Jays inked Anthony Santander, the list of potential reinforcements is thinning quickly.
Late on Jan. 20, a cryptic tweet from Red Sox manager Alex Cora sent fans' minds racing. The skipper posted a checkmark with no other context, and Red Sox Nation quickly flooded the comments to posit suggestions about his meaning.
Cora's tweet may not even be baseball-related, but fans hope it means the big move they've waited all winter for is coming soon. Most of the commenters hope Boston signed Alex Bregman — for whom Cora has advocated on multiple occasions — but there were a few hopes for a Nolan Arenado or Vladimir Guerrero Jr. trade in the mix.
Alex Cora's cryptic tweet sends Red Sox fans into a frenzy hoping for news
Chris Cotillo of MassLive reported on Jan. 19 that Boston still sees adding a right-handed bat as a "top priority," which could bode well for the many Bregman speculations in the comments of Cora's post. Cora coached Bregman during his tenure with the Astros in 2016-17, and the two hold each other in high regard. Signing Bregman could warrant such a reaction from Cora, especially after the reports of the front office's divided opinions about signing the veteran.
The morning after the manager's tweet, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reported that the Tigers' negotiations with Bregman have reached a standstill, which could open the door for Boston to (finally) sign one of the final pieces of its 2025 puzzle. There is still no confirmation that Cora's post was baseball-related, but Red Sox Nation hopes big news is coming for their favorite team.
