Detroit Lions star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown has had a relatively quiet offseason. The podcaster and top target for quarterback Jared Goff had an incredible 2024 campaign, but was obviously unable to help get the Lions to where most thought they'd go in the postseason: the Super Bowl.
That goal continues to be right in front of the Lions, though, as they chose to keep much of their core together on both ends of the ball in order to keep chugging towards the championship. And, it's certaintly a goal at the forefront of St. Brown's mind as he shared what every Detroit fan wants to hear from him in a recent appearance with Lions media.
“For us, it’s Super Bowl or nothing.”
That's the exact mindset every Lions player should have in OTAs and training camp. This team fell short of their goal in 2024 due to many factors out of their control, like a completely depleted defense due to injuries. This season, they're looking to get through 17 games with minimal injuries, especially on defense, in order to get through the postseason in the dominant fashion that many felt they would.
St. Brown offers succinct slogan for Lions season
Detroit, more or less, has to make the Super Bowl either this season or next. That's because so many of their key players - Jameson Williams, Aidan Hutchinson, Jahmyr Gibbs, Sam LaPorta, and Brian Branch, for example - are going to be free agents in 2027. It's hard to imagine a world where Detroit will be able to pay all of these core pieces as much as they deserve.
That's why winning one championship soon is so important. The Lions are in a sweet spot where they're getting ridiculous value out of these players who are on such small deals. As a result, they're still able to wheel and deal a bit this year and next in order to shore up certain positions while still allowing those stars to shine on very, very cheap deals.
While there's already been some concerning injury updates out of OTAs - Malcolm Rodriguez and Alim McNeill are going to be out for a good chunk of the first part of the season, while Alex Anzalone still hasn't reported to OTAs after breaking his forearm last season - it's been nothing too wild to worry about.
And, with Aidan Hutchinson back at 100%, it's hard to imagine this Lions team not pushing right up against a championship berth this year if they stay mostly healthy.
