Andrei Vasilevskiy receives gift of defense in shutout win vs. Devils

Saturday night began with Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy being showered with gifts and cheers in recognition of his 300th win two nights earlier.

Then, his teammates provided another present — a second straight stellar defensive showing in front of their elite netminder, an effort that led to a 4-0 win over the Devils and Vasilevskiy’s 36th career shutout.

“The most important gift was that they played great (Saturday) in front of me, and they helped me out to get another shutout,” Vasilevskiy said. “So, too many gifts (Saturday).”

Coming off their six-day break, the Lightning have given two of their best defensive efforts against two of the league’s top scoring offenses.

“We’re defending the way you should defend — with numbers,” Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. “When you’re above everything, now you’re able to defend as a group of five. You’re not putting stress on yourself. You’re doing a really good job of protecting the middle. But it all stems from just not giving up the freebies, and so you’re not giving up those odd-man rushes and defending as a group with a plan, and these are kind of the things that happen.”

Celebrating 300

After breaking Jacques Plante’s 61-year-old record for the fastest goaltender to reach 300 wins Thursday against Winnipeg, Vasilevskiy was congratulated by Hall of Famer Martin Brodeur, the NHL’s all-time wins leader (691), at the start of a video tribute put together by the Lightning.

“I definitely didn’t expect that, because I’m not even halfway there to get to catch him,” Vasilevskiy said “But, obviously, a huge honor that he did that for me.”

The messages rolled on, with salutes from Vasilevskiy’s brother, Alexei, and father, Andrei Sr.; then from former teammates Ben Bishop, Vladislav Namestnikov, Alex Killorn, Mikhail Sergachev and Steven Stamkos. They concluded with Stamkos’ oldest son, Carter, congratulating Vasilevskiy while wearing a Vasilevskiy goalie mask.

Vasilevskiy, who had his wife, Kseniya, and 8-year-old son, Lukas, by his side, was presented with a custom-engraved luxury watch by his teammates and a gold-plated goaltender’s stick from Lightning owner Jeff Vinik on behalf of the organization.

New-look lineup pays off

For the second straight game, the Lightning went with an 11-forward, seven-defenseman look, giving them not only an extra defender but Cooper an opportunity to jumble his lines.

With top center Brayden Point missing his fourth straight game with a lower-body injury, Nick Paul and Jake Guentzel skated together, joined by Gage Goncalves on a line that was the Lightning’s most productive. The trio had an 8-3 shot-attempt edge when on the ice together and did not allow a shot on goal in 7:31.

Guentzel found Paul for the game’s first goal with 5:33 left in the first period, Paul rifled a wrister from above the left circle through a Goncalves screen in front to give the Lightning the lead.

“He’s a good player, and obviously he sees the ice really well and has an unbelievable shot,” Guentzel said of Paul. “... So, it’s been fun. He communicates well, and we’ll see what happens.”

The Lightning could get a boost from Point’s return in the next few days, as it’s believed he could play on the upcoming two-game road trip to Pittsburgh on Tuesday and Columbus on Thursday.

Defense rules

Vasilevskiy made 14 of his 29 saves in the second period, and the Lightning entered the third focused on protecting a one-goal lead. Vasilevskiy made 10 saves in the final period, and his teammates scored three goals to provide breathing room.

But it was the way the Lightning played defensively as a group that allowed them to control the game, which played out much differently than when these teams met Oct. 22 in New Jersey, an 8-5 Lightning win.

“We worked on it and put it into effect in our game,” defenseman Victor Hedman said. “So, that’s what we want to accomplish. You don’t know where you stand coming off a six-day break, but obviously it was good for us to kind of reset, nitpicking our game and showing where we can improve it.”

The Lightning allowed just 11 scoring chances (and four high-danger chances) during 5-on-5 play. They blocked 19 shots, and six different players had multiple blocked shots.

The Lightning penalty kill went 4-for-4, blanking a Devils power play that entered the night ranked fourth in the league for eight minutes, including two minutes of 6-on-4 late in the third when New Jersey pulled goaltender Jacob Markstrom. Over the past four games, the Lightning penalty kill is a perfect 12-for-12.

Over his past eight games, Vasilevskiy owns a .948 save percentage and is averaging 1.50 goals allowed per game, a stretch that includes two shutouts.
