Anonymous NFL Coach Rants About $10 Million Jets Rookie

A lot of people are excited about the potential of New York Jets rookie tight end Mason Taylor.

Mason Taylor, New York Jets

Perhaps none more so than an anonymous veteran NFL offensive coach who spoke with ESPN’s NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler.

“Jets selecting TE Mason Taylor at No. 42: ‘He’s f—ing awesome. He was my No. 2 tight end [behind Chicago’s Colston Loveland]. He’s athletic, he’s young (21) and he’s got upside in the passing game,'” an anonymous coach told Fowler.

Taylor Has a Chance to Make Some Serious Noise for the Jets in 2025

During the dead period between mandatory minicamp and training camp, Fowler took stock of the biggest moves made this NFL offseason.

Fowler spoke with a panel of coaches, league scouts, and executives to gauge which offseason moves were their favorites.

That all led to the viral comment about Taylor and his potential in 2025.

There are several reasons for optimism about Taylor’s role and the likelihood of an immediate impact at the NFL level.

As Jets team reporter Nick Faria told me on “The Manchild Show with Boy Green Digital”, Taylor has a clear path to being second on the team in targets behind Garrett Wilson in 2025.

That would be because of two reasons.

Outside of Wilson, there isn’t a clear-cut No. 2 wide receiver on the team. That is good news for Taylor’s role in this offense.

Throughout Fields’ NFL career to date, he has targeted tight ends at a high clip. While we don’t know exactly what this Tanner Engstrand offense will look like in 2025, it’s safe to assume he will lean towards Fields’ strengths.

“Fields has an 87.7 QBR when targeting tight ends over the last two seasons, per ESPN Research. Only Lamar Jackson (93.9) and Brock Purdy (92.4) have a higher QBR in that span (minimum: 20 games played),” ESPN’s Rich Cimini revealed.

Nothing to Worry About Regarding Taylor’s Contract Situation

The former LSU product remains unsigned weeks ahead of training camp.

Buffalo Bills sideline reporter Sal Capaccio told me on “The Manchild Show with Boy Green Digital” that there isn’t much to worry about with all of these unsigned second-rounders.

When Taylor does eventually sign his rookie contract, it’ll be a four-year deal worth $10.46 million, per Spotrac.

“As usual, the amount of guaranteed money is the primary sticking point. The top two picks in the round, Cleveland Browns linebacker Carson Schwesinger and Houston Texans wide receiver Jayden Higgins, reportedly received fully guaranteed deals — the first fully-guaranteed contracts for second-round picks,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini revealed.

When that kind of history is made, the rest of the second-round picks want to jump on the train. It’s an understandable pivot from the players, but the other teams in the NFL don’t want to acquiesce because of two outliers.

The good news for the Jets is that even though Taylor isn’t under contract, he has still participated throughout the entire offseason program.

Across Taylor’s three seasons in college, he finished with 129 receptions for 1,308 receiving yards and six touchdowns. He averaged 10.1 yards per catch during his collegiate career.
