Are more spinoffs on the horizon for The Walking Dead universe?

The latest spinoffs of The Walking Dead have pleased most fans with new stories, characters, and settings. These three shows focus on fan-favorite characters Daryl, Carol, Negan, Maggie, Rick, and Michonne, giving viewers what they want: continued stories.

Are more spinoffs on the horizon for The Walking Dead universe?

One complaint many viewers had about the main series is that the cast was so vast that it was challenging to feature in-depth stories about the characters they love. The final mega-season consisted of 24 episodes and introduced many new characters, again diluting the stories of the main cast. It was a great season, and the new characters were exciting, but some characters would be absent from the story for multiple episodes, requiring viewers to try and remember where their story left off.

The question continues to pop up: Does The Walking Dead need more spinoffs? My answer is yes, if the creators continue the path of Daryl Dixon, Dead City, and The Ones Who LiveThese series have done a fabulous job of creating stories about known characters that are interesting and set in exciting new locations like Manhattan and France while introducing new characters who add new flavor to TWDU.

TWD Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple has served within the universe in many different capacities. He began his TWD journey in 2011, joining as a co-producer and writer and took over as showruner in season 4. Since then he has created other series like World Beyond with Matt Negrete, and serves in varioius roles on the spinoffs. In 2018, he became the CCO who serves over the creative helm of the franchise.

Gimple has made many statements regarding the future of TWDU and it appears that things will continue with new content in the near future. At the 2024 New York Comic Con panel Gimple teased the audience with this comment: “We have something cooking up in another area of the world, something very different...We have something relatively imminent, and then dreams of the future.”

Currently AMC is airing The Walking Dead: Dead City, whose second season will premiere in Spring 2025 and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon whose third season will premiere in 2025. It will be exciting to see what's to come in The Walking Dead universe.
