“Matilda and the Brave Escape is an uplifting and empowering short film based on the true story of Matilda, a pig who escaped from a farm in the UK and gave birth to her piglets in a nearby woodland – saving herself and her piglets from certain death,” Winters shared in a statement.
“The story of Matilda is incredible for many reasons – from Matilda herself to the dedication and kindness of everyone who campaigned for her freedom, her story is truly remarkable.”
The film, produced in a family-friendly, animated style, emphasises the authentic experience of Matilda as an individual rather than anthropomorphising her.
Winters explained, “While many children’s stories anthropomorphise animals, we wanted to showcase Matilda as the autonomous individual that she really is, allowing an audience to connect with her experience more authentically.
While Matilda’s story is uplifting, Winters points out the billions of other pigs face a different fate, explaining “Ultimately, though the realities of pig farming are truly horrifying, Matilda’s story is one of a huge amount of hope and inspiration.”
For most pigs, their lives tragically end on people’s plates, a fate that Matilda narrowly escaped thanks to her bold dash for freedom and the kindness of campaigners.
The film is available to watch now on YouTube, and those moved by Matilda’s journey are invited to contribute to the care of animals at Surge Sanctuary through donations at matildaandthebraveescape.com, helping ensure a safe, fulfilling life for Matilda, her family, and others at the sanctuary.

Ramsey, who is also dedicated to raising awareness about the environmental impact of animal agriculture, has spoken out to confirm that their love for animals was a primary motivation for going vegan.
“I’m vegan primarily because I love animals. But I also, like most of us, care about the planet,” they shared.
