Boston Bruins Make Major Front Office Decision After Horrific 2024-25 Campaign

Just a year after giving the eventual Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers a run for their money in the postseason, the Boston Bruins are putting the finishing touches on what has been an awful 2024-25 campaign. As a result, the team has reportedly made a decision on the fates of general manager Don Sweeney and president Cam Neely.

After some historic regular seasons in recent years, the Boston Bruins took a shocking step back this season, and after trading some key pieces of the team, their future as a squad is certainly looking murky.

As a result of some less than ideal returns on those trades and poor off-seasons in recent years, many believed that the future of one or both Don Sweeney (GM) and Cam Neely (President of Hockey Operations) was up in the air coming into the summer of 2025.

The Bruins entered the year with heightened expectations after making big splashes for Elias Pettersson and Nikita Zadorov in free agency. Things never went as expected for them, though, as they have struggled mightily all year long, resulting in them posting a 33-39-9 record with just one game left in the regular season.

“I don’t think we need to really strip this down,” Neely recently said when discussing the state of the Bruins. “We moved some significant pieces, obviously, at the deadline. Hopefully we can replace some of those pieces and get us back to where we want to be, which is competing for Stanley Cups, being a team that has a chance to win everything.”

Boston's rough season saw head coach Jim Montgomery get fired, while veteran players such as Brad Marchand, Brandon Carlo, and Charlie Coyle were moved at the trade deadline. Questions about Sweeney and Neely's respective futures with the team have risen as a result, but reports indicate they will not be fired this offseason.

"Sources say no changes are expected in Bruins front office. Both Don Sweeney and Cam Neely have been in lockstep, hard at work on the next iteration of the club," Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff reported on X.

The Bruins will wrap up their 2024-25 season on Tuesday night, when they square off against the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. ET.
