The Boston Red Sox shocked the baseball community earlier this week by trading Rafael Devers. After months of discontent, the Red Sox finally made their move.
Not only does the Devers trade represent a waiving of the white flag this season, it set up a situation that one Red Sox staffer described as an “absolute sh– show.” But that’s not all.
In a recent exposé by Yahoo Sports’ Joon Lee, the Red Sox are described as a team that has become dysfunctional under manager Alex Cora and general manager Craig Breslow.
According to Lee, Cora and Breslow simply don’t “see eye-to-eye on the direction of the team.” The manager wants to win now. Yet, Breslow believes he was hired to build for the long run, one that can be sustained for multiple seasons instead of a quick playoff appearance.
Yet, last season’s acquisition of Garrett Crochet clearly sent a signal that the Red Sox were trying to push all their chips in to win now. Of course, the Devers trade contradicts that direction in the short term.
Add it all up, and it looks like the Red Sox are a team that can’t decide who they are. If nothing else, trading Devers proves that they’re not afraid to shake things up, especially if a player or manager goes against the grain.
