Breaking: Chiefs Release Super Bowl Champion In Shocking Move Before 2025 Season

The Kansas City Chiefs have a sour taste in their mouth from the 2024 season.  After an incredible post-season run, Kansas City was outplayed from the very first quarter in Super Bowl 59.  Their 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles left them one win shy of a three-peat.

The team, however, is ready for a comeback.  It just so happens, one former Super Bowl champion won’t be part of it.

Two more players have been released by the Kansas City Chiefs as training camp approaches:

Per Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk, the Kansas City Chiefs released guard Tremayne Anchrum Jr. and tight end Kevin Foelsch. The Chiefs had to clear two roster spots after signing undrafted rookie Joey Lombard (an offensive lineman) and former UFL tight end standout Geor’Quarius Spivey.

Foelsch, 24, was on the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad last season but never played a snap. The 26-year-old Anchrum was a seventh-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams in 2020, winning a Super Bowl 56 championship ring with them in his sophomore year.

Kansas City Chiefs GM Brett Veach has kept most of the core together from last season. He re-signed wide receivers JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown, running back Kareem Hunt and gave star guard Trey Smith the franchise tag.

The most notable departure was Pro Bowl guard Joe Thuney, who was traded to the Chicago Bears in a cap-saving move. Safety Justin Reid (New Orleans Saints) and defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton (Carolina Panthers) left KC to sign multi-year deals in free agency, too.

Patrick Mahomes and the defending AFC champions will look to kick off the 2025 season on a high note when they play the AFC West rival Los Angeles Chargers in the season opener on Sept. 5.

That game will be held at Arena Corinthians in São Paulo, Brazil, the first 2025 game of the NFL International Series. The Chiefs have won seven straight meetings against the Bolts.
