The Boston Celtics could look vastly different next season, but one star might not be going anywhere.
Since being eliminated in the second round by the New York Knicks, the conversation around the Celtics has been loud. With such a rough financial situation, the Celtics need to shed some contracts this offseason, and it’s seemed like everyone outside of Jayson Tatum is at least in the discussion.
However, one of Boston’s 2008 champions, Brian Scalabrine, clearly believes there is another Celtic that won’t be leaving any time soon. In a recent NBC Sports Boston special, Scalabrine pushed back on the idea that Derrick White could be traded this offseason.
“There’s no way in hell Derrick White is not on this team next year, the next five years,” Scalabrine said. “We just know. Come on.”
While Scalabrine might not necessarily be breaking any news, as a member of the Celtics’ broadcast team and former player, he likely has a pretty good idea of what’s happening in the organization. Of course, it doesn’t take a former Celtic to know that White is a critical part of everything Boston has done over the past few years.
With a couple of Finals runs and a ring since arriving in Boston, sending White out the door would be a tough ask. Last season, he averaged a career-high 16.4 points and shot 38.4% from deep.

Although White’s $28.1 million salary for next season isn’t ideal for Boston, another leap from him and more usage in Tatum’s absence would likely make that contract more than worth it for the Celtics as they look to climb back into contention.
