While the Dallas Cowboys have been busy this offseason, one big thing still needs to be done and that's signing Micah Parsons to an extension. The Cowboys spent the 12th overall pick on Parsons in the 2021 NFL Draft and he's been a monster for them, tallying double-digit sacks in each of his four seasons.
So, why hasn't Parsons been signed to an extension then? The Cowboys knew they wanted to extend him but have drug their feet on doing so, making the price tag rise higher and higher the longer they wait.
Cowboys first-year Brian Schottenheimer discussed the situation and his comments didn't exact make anyone feel better about Parsons' extension (or lack thereof). He was specifically asked if he could see a scenario where Parsons isn't with the Cowboys this year.
"I wouldn't think so. He's an elite player. He's a guy we think can wreak havoc on opposing offenses for a long time in a Cowboys uniform."
Schottenheimer also spoke about how the team needs to ensure that the lack of an extension for Parsons doesn't become a distraction. He even points to the Cowboys' situation with Zack Martin two years ago, noting that "You know this is something you are seeing more and more, it's not just the Cowboys that deal with this, it's league-wide, right? The hold-ins or whatever they are calling them; don't let it be a distraction."
While it does feel that eventually an extension will get done for Parsons, it's unsettling that the front office has waited this long to make it happen. Parsons has played well enough for a nice payday and if the Cowboys knew they were going to do this all along, why didn't they get ahead of it rather than drag their feet and make the bill even more expensive?
Hopefully a deal gets done soon so this doesn't become an even bigger distraction and storyline.
