Brock Purdy debunks narrative of needing All-Pros despite 49ers loss to Rams

What's going to be the excuse for Brock Purdy's doubters this go-around in light of another Niners loss?

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy (13)

Every quarterback across the NFL would be envious of the situation San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy finds himself in.

Few signal-callers enjoy the array of offensive weaponry that Purdy has, an arsenal that includes All-Pros in tight end George Kittle, running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver Deebo Samuel.

However, all three of those weapons were out with various injuries for the Niners' Week 3 road contest against the Los Angeles Rams. And despite LA having a banged-up roster, too, the pressure would be on Purdy to find other ways to engineer the offense.

Narrator: "He did."

Purdy was masterful during San Francisco's otherwise embarrassing 27-24 loss to its NFC West rivals, a game where special teams gaffes and a falling-apart defense didn't help matters whatsoever.

Drops, too. Six of them in total.

With his team now 1-2, it's safe to say Purdy isn't the 49ers' problem three weeks into the season, and he debunked whatever early concerns there may have been about the third-year pro needing his offensive weaponry to succeed.

Brock Purdy excellent in 49ers' Week 3 loss vs. Rams

Purdy didn't cost the Niners the game. At all.

Los Angeles largely contained backup running back Jordan Mason during the game, holding him to 77 yards on 19 carries, putting more pressure on Purdy to distribute the ball.

While some figured Week 3 would be a breakout game for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, fellow wideout Jauan Jennings was easily the one who rose to answer the quarterback's call, hauling in 11 catches for a whopping 175 yards and three touchdowns.

However, most around the league don't view Jennings as a top-tier weapon, rather a complementary player used primarily on third downs.

Purdy getting Jennings involved frequently, though, showed how the quarterback doesn't need his best cast of All-Pros on an every-game basis.

Overall, the quarterback's final line was a good one: 22-of-30 passing for 292 yards, three touchdowns and a passer rating of 137.1.

It might have included a victory, too, if second-year wide receiver Ronnie Bell didn't drop a very catchable pass on what could have been a game-sealing drive late in the fourth quarter.

Unfortunately, there'll still be those who feel the final pick from the 2022 NFL Draft is merely carried by his team regardless of yet another piece of evidence suggesting otherwise.
