San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy earned some MVP buzz last season as he led his team to the Super Bowl, but the team and the quarterback came crashing back to earth this year.
The 49ers have been marked by injuries and inconsistent play this season as they have dropped to 6-8. Purdy is also having his worst statistical season since taking over as starter in 2022, throwing for 3,174 yards with 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
The downturn led to questions about whether the 49ers will stick with the former seventh-round pick in the future, but The Athletic's Dianna Russini threw some cold water on the rumors.
Russini reported that the 49ers still view Purdy as their quarterback of the future -- and are preparing to give him a long-term deal to solidify it.
"They’re firmly committed to Brock Purdy as their long-term quarterback," Russini wrote. "I’ve been told the 49ers are still planning to negotiate a multi-year contract extension with Purdy this offseason, backing up the message they’ve consistently sent: 'Purdy is our quarterback.'"
Russini added that the size of the contract extension remains up in the air, though noted that the 49ers would be able to free up the cap space for a long-term deal.
"Now, the big question is: How much will they pay him?" Russini wrote. "Extending Purdy is definitely doable, but it will require some savvy salary cap moves and maybe a few roster adjustments in 2025."
