The Denver Broncos were one of the biggest surprises of the 2024 season. While their preseason win total was just 5.5 wins, tied for the second-fewest in the NFL, they wound up finishing the season 10-7 and reaching the postseason for the first time since 2015.
Denver has looked to strengthen their roster in free agency, adding safety Talanoa Hufanga, linebacker Dre Greenlaw and tight end Evan Engram. While several key members of the Broncos are eligible for extensions - and reportedly looking to sign new deals - the front office appears to be holding those talks off until after the 2025 NFL Draft.
Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette shared the news, tweeting:
Source says the #Broncos at this point do not plan to delve into contract extension negotiations with players until after the April 24-26 draft. Those notable in line for possible extensions are Courtland Sutton, Nik Bonitto, Zach Allen, John Franklin-Myers and Malcolm Roach.
Check out the tweet from Chris Tomasson below:
Sutton played a key role in Denver's offense finishing tenth in scoring as he recorded 1,081 receiving yards and eight touchdowns on 81 receptions. Meanwhile, Bonitto, Allen, Franklin-Myers and Roach were all crucial pieces of the Broncos' defense, which ranked third in points allowed. The four players combined for 31.5 sacks as Bonitto and Allen were both named second-team All-Pros.
It is unclear if Denver will look to draft future replacements for any of their extension-eligible players next month. The front office's strategy could potentially backfire, however, if members of the group decide to hold out.
