The Los Angeles Lakers are the focal point of the NBA right now, because there’s so much talk about whether star player LeBron James will stay with the franchise for the 2024-25 season or leave. One of the reasons for James to stay is because his son, Bronny James, is currently with Los Angeles.
Of course, in dreamland, LeBron could work out a deal that sees him and Bronny both getting traded to a new team, so he can continue to wrap up his NBA career with his son by his side. But, that kind of deal would take a lot of work behind the scene, so it’s a big question mark as to whether that will happen.
Whether or not James and Bronny stay with the Lakers, one thing is for certain: Bronny is making waves in the NBA, and it’s not just because of his last name. Bronny’s performance at the NBA Summer League is getting attention in a very good way.
Bronny James Steals the Spotlight From LeBron, For a Moment
Bronny’s performance in the NBA Summer League has been so strong that he’s kind of stolen the spotlight from his dad, at least for a moment. We’re sure LeBron don’t mind.
In a piece published on Wednesday, July 16, for FanSided, Ian Levy gushes over Bronny’s Summer League showing, and he’s not the only one.
“He got off to a slow start in the two games of the California Classic Summer League but Bronny has looked impressive in Las Vegas, particularly in his last two games where’s totaled 31 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals and a block in just over 48 minutes, shooting better than 50 percent from the field,” Levy notes.
He also says that even though “the expectations will be high, and the criticism will come quickly anytime he struggles,” Bronny is looking much more NBA-ready right now “than he did last season, and that means a lot for his future and that of the Lakers.”
The NBA also took to X to praise Bronny, stating, “Bronny James showed out in tonight’s #NBA2KSummerLeague action” with a fire emoji and sharing Bronny’s impressive Summer League stats.
Bronny James is Focused on Defense
One of the areas that Bronny is focusing on, and it shows, is defense. Head of the Summer League, he spoke about how he plans to really up his defensive game for the 2025-26 season.
“It’s definitely made me think about being more aggressive on that end of the floor, but I can’t lose that defensive drive that will get me on the floor because there’s going to be guys that can score 15, 20 a game,” he said, adding, “I’m most likely not going to be that guy right now. To get myself on the floor. I’ve got to be a defensive menace.”
It’s refreshing to see Bronny so self-aware of what he can, and can’t, do right now. Focusing on defense is certainly the right way to go about his game.
