Browns’ Andrew Berry Breaks Silence on Shedeur Sanders, Cleveland’s QB Situation

With five quarterbacks on the roster, and four of them being healthy, the Cleveland Browns are in a strange position. The front office might have to make a decision over the next few months, and that could require them to trade one of them.

Andrew Berry Faces Tough Quarterback Decision for Cleveland Browns

However, when speaking to reporters about the quarterback situation, General Manager Andrew Berry had a bunch to say on why that might not happen.

He noted that everybody will have to compete for a spot, something Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel will love to hear. As long as both of them get an opportunity to win a job during training camp, the Browns should start the best quarterback in their QB room.

“No,” said Berry, according to Yahoo. “The reality of it is everybody’s got to compete. Everybody’s got to earn their keep, so to speak.

“If you’re in any position room and you’re worried about a guy that’s taken or signed that’s out of your control, then you probably don’t have the mental wiring to be as competitive as you need to be for that spot.”

Which Quarterbacks Are Getting First-Team Reps?

During OTAs, however, the Cleveland Browns didn’t exactly get creative with who was playing quarterback with the first team.

There were some reports that youngsters were getting the mix, while veterans were also starting.

However, when speaking to reporters about OTAs, Berry added that it doesn’t have to be that way moving forward. With the entire offseason ahead of the Browns, he admitted that the job of the backups is to be ready to play, and Cleveland will put them in the best position to do so by allowing them opportunities to compete in practice.

“Oftentimes the thought in the NFL is like, ‘OK, well your starter gets 70% of the reps, your backup gets 25% of the reps and your third guy gets 5% of the reps,” Berry told Yahoo Sports. “And the job of the backups is to be ready to play with no reps.

“It doesn’t have to be that way — especially in the spring when we have some flexibility.”

Will the Browns Keep All Five Quarterbacks on the Roster?

When asked if there’s a possibility that five quarterbacks will be on the roster, Berry said the Cleveland Browns were considering it. He then added that if everybody plays well enough, the Browns will have a tough decision to make, but there’s a scenario where all five of them could be on the roster.

“Absolutely, absolutely, absolutely… If they all play well enough,” Berry said.

Regarding Sanders, all he can do is worry about showing up every day and being the best possible player and teammate he can be. When speaking to reporters about his perspective on the offseason and more, he added that he’s trying to be the best teammate and to be as polished as possible in every aspect, both on and off the field.

“My goal is to be the best teammate and to be as polished as I can be in every aspect,” Sanders said after Browns practice. “I view things as I got time. I got time to be able to grow and mature and be able to understand the ins and outs of the defenses and be able to get the good insight from the vets in the room. I look at it as a plus. I got time to really be able to have a great understanding.”
