Cleveland Browns star running back Nick Chubb was one of the best players in the NFL just a few seasons ago. But after his gruesome injury in Week 2 of the 2023 season, things have changed.
In a recent piece by PFF's Mason Cameron, he picks the player who he thinks is the best fit for every NFL team on Day 2 of the NFL Draft. For the Browns, he thinks they could draft their running back of the future and take a chance on Arizona State superstar Cam Skattebo.
"Cleveland has struggled to find a workhorse back to lean on since Nick Chubb’s devastating knee injury. Skattebo would undoubtedly fill the void," Cameron writes. "His physicality jumps off the tape as both a runner and a blocker, possessing a mentality and the after-contact consistency that the Browns' front office can build around while they figure out the quarterback situation."
It was good to see Chubb returning to action this past season, but he only averaged 3.3 yards per carry, which is in stark contrast to the 5.1 that he averages over the course of his career.
Skattebo averaged 5.8 yards per carry, and he did so on 293 attempts. His numbers were video game-like, as he finished 2024 with 1,711 yards and 21 touchdowns on the ground. He was also able to get it done in the passing game with 605 yards and three touchdowns in the air.
As sad as it may be, the Browns may decide in the next few seasons that it is time to move on from Chubb. When they make that decision, Skattebo could be the guy to come in and be the workhorse that the team needs.
