As the Kansas City Chiefs prepare for their Week 3 Sunday Night Football showdown against the Atlanta Falcons, it's a good time to check in on how some of the team's former players are doing.
Veteran wideout Kadarius Toney is one ex-Chief who's in a new situation this season. The former 2021 first-rounder was released by Kansas City ahead of August's 53-man roster deadline only to be added to the Cleveland Browns' practice squad on Sept. 9.
While Toney is young enough (25) to turn his career around in Cleveland, he has a long road ahead of him judging by the terrible start to his Browns tenure.
Chiefs News: Kadarius Toney Held Out of Browns Practice with Injury
Browns insider Daniel Oyefusi is reporting that Toney won't practice at all this week as he continues to heal from an injury, per Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski. The injury is also undisclosed, meaning it's tough to predict when he'll make his Cleveland debut.
While it's unfortunate that Toney is being limited with an injury, it's hardly a new experience if you've been following his NFL career.
Since making his professional debut with the New York Giants in 2021, Toney has gone on to suit up in only 32 career games. He missed an average of 6.7 games across his first three seasons and has never played more than 13 games. Based on how his time with the Browns has begun, that trend is likely to continue.
Whenever Toney becomes healthy, he'll look to get back on track after only tallying 27 catches for 169 receiving yards and one touchdown in 13 games with the Chiefs last season. He sat out of the final three regular-season games and the entire postseason with injuries, which even followed him into this year's training camp.
We'll see if Toney's outlook improves as the season progresses. While he's a speedy receiver who's capable of making highlight-reel plays, prolonged health issues will prevent him from reaching his potential.
