There is one word that is needed to describe the kind of season the Cleveland Browns are having and that word is ‘failure’. At 2-8 on the season, the Browns look like a team that is completely checked out on the season.
Expectations were there for the Browns entering the season. Cleveland believed they could be healthier this season and build off of a playoff appearance from last season. That is not happening and it won’t be close. A 35-14 loss to the New Orleans Saints in Week 11 was the latest of bad for Cleveland.
Following the game, Browns defensive end Myles Garrett pointed out the reason that he and his teammates have to continue to go out there and give effort.
"Legacy," Garrett said. "I play this game to be the very best there is, and I expect everyone else to play because they love it. Play because they want to be remembered for something. Whether you're 2-8 or 8-2, this [season] will be remembered for years to come. There will be film, people will speak about you. And you'll have to know that your effort and what you put on tape is going to decide what's gonna happen for your career, and for years to come."
The Browns gave up 473 yards of offense and 35 points to the Saints. Coming off of a bye week, this was an inexcusable effort for the Browns. Garrett didn’t show up on the stat sheet at all and the Browns had just one sack. It was the game that pretty much summarizes the kind of season that the Browns are having.
Still, there are guys on contracts that will be expiring and they will want to be able to get a deal elsewhere. Playing badly down the stretch of the season could have an impact on that, as said by Garrett. Cleveland also needs to continue to play their younger players and build for the future.
It doesn’t get any easier from here, as the Browns will play the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night. Not the best of times for the Browns to be playing the best team in the AFC North to this point.
