Browns sign 2, waive 1 as roster churns

Cleveland adds O-line depth in Chim Okorafor and another defensive end in Jeremiah Martin.

Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry stayed busy on Wednesday as the club prepares to head to West Virginia for the first practice of training camp on Thursday at The Greenbriar resort.

After placing seven players on the appropriate training camp injury lists earlier in the day, including a surprise in cornerback Greg Newsome II, Berry kept the roster churning by signing offensive tackle Chim Okorafor and defensive end Jeremiah Martin, and waiving linebacker Caleb Johnson.

The addition of Okorafor was expected after reports surfaced earlier this week that the Browns were planning to sign him after he showed the club something during a workout in June. They can also use some depth at the position after placing Jack Conklin and Jedrick Wills Jr. on the PUP list.

Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023, the 6-foot-6 and 315-pound Okorafor was most recently with the Michigan Panthers of the UFL.

Okorafor started his collegiate career as a basketball player at Cal Poly Pomona before transferring to Riverside Community College after two seasons. From there, he moved to Missouri Southern State for one season, then to Pittsburg State for a season before finally landing at Benedictine College in Kansas.

At Benedictine, he was an NAIA All-American selection in 2022 as a member of an offensive line that allowed just 12 sacks in 13 games, ranked fifth in total offense, and seventh in passing yards.

The Browns originally signed the 6-foot-3 and 265-pound Martin as an undrafted free agent in 2023 out of Washington. He spent last season on the practice squad of the New York Giants before being waived in early May of this year.

Martin spent two seasons with the Huskies, earning a First Team All-Pac-12 selection in 2022, and a Second Team selection in 2021. He played in 24 games with Washington, finishing with 54 tackles, 9.5 sacks, and 12 tackles for loss.

Prior to Washington, Martin was at Texas A&M for three seasons, playing in 31 games and totaling 11 tackles and three tackles for loss.

Johnson has been in the league for three seasons, primarily as a special teams player. He was with the Chicago Bears in 2021 before moving on to the Jacksonville Jaguars for two seasons. The Browns had signed him to a reserve/future contract in January.
