The Cleveland Browns are once again without the services of starting quarterback Deshaun Watson after another season-ending injury.
Contrary to the fans' wishes, it seems like the Browns are willing to welcome Watson back in 2025, possibly due to the $92 million they still owe him. It may also be that the club still thinks his best is yet to come.
Either way, Cleveland did the right thing in signing quarterback Jameis Winston as an insurance policy, and it's paying off this season.
Winston is here on a one-year deal, and it would be easy for the Browns to jump the gun and extend him through the next year or two, but should they?
CBS Sports' Aditi Kinkhabwala thinks Cleveland should be careful with how the address the Winston situation.
“Why be in a rush right now?” Kinkhabwala said. “This is not one of those young guys you want to lock up before he suddenly gets more expensive. Let’s see how the rest of the season goes.”
He's not wrong. We have a large body of work on which to judge Winston's NFL career, and his successes and failures this season should only be a small part of it.
The fact that the Browns are interested in bringing Watson back is a bit alarming, but I get it, with the guaranteed money. That doesn't mean they have to start him. If they think Winston is a viable option as the starter then they need to take that approach the rest of the season in terms of evaluation.
And then come this offseason, make the move that's best for the team.
